    Horse Racing FAQ

It’s important to note that every bookmaker will have different odds when it comes to horse racing. Therefore, it pays to compare the prices and pick out the biggest one for every selection that you want to back. By doing this, you get better value for your horse racing betting and have a stronger chance of securing a long-term profit on this sport.
There are a number of ways to win when you bet on horse racing. The most popular racing bet involves backing a horse to win their respective race. You choose the odds that you like and nominate a stake which is multiplied by the price. However, some customers bet each-way and you can therefore win if your horse is second, third or fourth in a race.
Many bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed and this is where you can take an early price and get the Starting Price on your selection if the latter is bigger. This is an excellent racing concession and means that you don’t have to worry about taking the early odds and the horse then drifting to a bigger price. This is generally available on UK and Irish race meetings.
The short answer is yes. Every time you place a bet on horse racing, you have a chance to land a winning return. Ultimately, one horse has to win every race and there are always customers who will have backed the winner. However, not many customers are able to generate a long-term profit when it comes to betting on racing as it’s hard to find winners all the time.
Each-way betting is when you back a horse to win and place. Half of your stake is the horse to win and half your stake is to place. Place means the horse to finish in the top two, three or four depending on the number of runners in the race. Your place odds are generally either 1/4 or 1/5 of the price of the horse, so you should take this into account when betting each-way.
When a horse is favourite to win a particular race, it implies that this runner is the most likely to win out of all the runners. However, backing the favourite on a regular basis is generally not a profitable strategy and we would recommend looking at the other horses in the race and considering a bet on these selections. A favourite will create a smaller winning return than any other horse.
Yes, many online bookmakers have deals in place with the horse racing TV channels which means that you can enjoy live streaming when it comes to UK and Irish horse racing meetings. It usually involves a customer placing a minimum bet on the race in question and this then gives you live stream access of the race from start to finish, along with accompanying audio commentary.
Many bookmakers have In-Play betting odds for selected horse races. Some of the shorter distance races don’t have live betting prices, although the National Hunt racing can involve distances over one mile or even two miles and that means the chance to bet In-Running on the runners. It can be exciting watching the action and wagering on the horse that you think will win.
There is lots of information available for each horse in a particular race. Important factors are age, weight and form, with the latter generally being shown through a series of numbers to indicate previous finishing positions. Some customers also judge a horse by trainer or jockey, while the odds are also a good guide as to the respective chances of that runner winning their respective race.
It’s actually possible to back every horse in a particular race although this is generally not regarded as a profitable way forward. That is because if you spread your stakes thinly on every runner, the return is likely to be less than the amount you have bet. We advise betting on a small handful of horses and sometimes just one considering that only one can win the race in question.
The favourite in a horse race is generally the horse that is backed the most, although they don’t tend to win as often as you think. A lot of the time, the bookies will create an artificially short price about the market-leading horse in the knowledge that a lot of customers will want to back it. However, we would say the favourite wins on average about 25% of the time.
When you lay a horse to win or bet on a runner not to win, you essentially win if that horse doesn’t win the race in question. Laying a horse on a betting exchange effectively means you’re playing the role of traditional bookmaker and taking a customer’s money on that horse to win. That means you are cheering on the other horses in the race.
Over time, consistently laying the favourite in a horse race might serve as a profitable route, although it depends on the prices and of course, the outcome of a particular group of races. If you’re convinced that a horse is trading too short as the favourite, then it could be advantageous to take on the runner and have lots of other contenders running for you.
A racing accumulator involves picking out horses from different races. You then put them in a multiple bet for a certain stake and can win a big amount if all the selections win their races. However, you do need all the runners to win. Sometimes punters bet a double (two horses to win) or a treble (three horses to win) instead.
