2023 Intermediate Handicap Hurdle Betting Odds at Newbury racecourse

Saturday, 02 December 2023

Under Control and Brentford Hope are among the favourites to win the 2023 Newbury Intermediate Handicap Hurdle, with as many as fourteen runners lining up to compete over two miles, half a furlong. The former is trained by Nicky Henderson and much depends on whether last season’s form can be retained after a string of wins.

Brentford Hope was able to score as a six-year-old last time out and carries four pounds less than the favourite, with Hansard the other runner who is trading at single figure racing betting odds. Gary Moore’s runner can’t be easily ignored and the five-year-old who could be a strong each-way contender.

Under Control returns to the course after over 200 days away from the track, with the horse last seen obliging at Sandown Park when winning the bet365 Novices' Championship Final Handicap Hurdle. It was a strong performance over two miles on soft ground, with the horse just doing enough to win by half a length.

Previously to this came a victory in the Fillies’ Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, with Brentford Hope also coming into the race off the back of a win. Sent off as the 11/4 joint-favourite in the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Newbury, the horse was seriously impressive when registering a sixteen-length victory.

There could be more to come from the Harry Derham-trained runner, with the horse likely to run well over two miles, half a furlong. Hansard could also be a lively contender and the five-year-old is likely to be the most popular each-way selection in the race. The runner was sent off at a massive 40/1 in the Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree last April.

However, Hansard outran these odds to finish in fourth place, with another solid performance coming in the JenningsBet Elite Hurdle at Wincanton Racecourse, with other bigger priced selections also likely to run into the places. Some bookies will offer extra places and that could bring Matterhorn and Our Champ into consideration.
