2023 Gillies Fillies Stakes Betting Odds at Newcastle racecourse

Saturday, 11 November 2023

Veil Of Shadows is trading as the favourite to win the Gillies Fillies’ Stakes at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday 11 November. The Godolphin-trained runner could benefit from carrying less weight than her older adversaries, with Mukaddamah and Sound Angela coming next in the betting and they could be popular each-way picks.

Persist and Rousay are also among the favourites and there are likely to be extra places available for each-way betting. There aren’t many wins between any of the runners in the field and it will be interesting to see which selections are backed in the lead-up to the off, with this looking like a value race upon which to bet.

2023 Gillies Fillies’ Stakes Tips

Veil Of Shadows has been installed as the betting favourite to win the Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Irish EBF Gillies Fillies' Stakes, with the three-year-old bidding to win his first race in seven attempts. After winning on her debut at Kempton back in February, there has been a succession of near misses since, with the horse finishing second at Newmarket last time out.

Sent off at racing odds of 18/1, there was a strong performance in the Group 3 Newmarket Pony Academy Pride Stakes. The Charlie Appleby-trained charge previously ran well at big odds when finishing sixth in the Princess Royal Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Stakes. However, there are lots of lively contenders and Mukaddamah is available at a bigger price.

The latter was tenth out of eleven runners at Newmarket in the same race as Veil Of Shadows, although there was previously a second-placed finish in the EBF Stallions John Musker Fillies' Stakes at Yarmouth. We also saw the horse punch above her weight in a listed race at York back in July when finishing second to Midnight Mile.

Sound Angela is trained by Roger Varian and she was able to finish third out of eleven runners at Saint-Cloud in the Prix Dahlia - Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage. Perhaps Rousay is the best each-way betting value and the Richard Hannon-trained runner has hit the frame in the past three renewals, with more potentially to come.
