2024 Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase Tips
The Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase will be run over two miles, four and a half furlongs, with Dinoblue looking like the one to beat this year. Although she only finished second in her previous outing, the bookies still greatly respect her chances, with the horse having finished second in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase at the Festival twelve months ago.
More recently, there was a smart performance when finishing second to El Fabiolo at the Dublin Racing Festival, with the horse getting relatively close to the odds-on favourite and that came after successive wins at Naas and Leopardstown. It’s hard to see what might beat her on the day, although Allegorie De Vassy can’t be easily discounted.
This pretender also runs for Willie Mullins and has won two of her three outings this year, with the latest being in a listed race at Naas where she was able to beat favourite Riviere D’etel. The latter will take her place in this encounter although she’s currently trading as the fourth favourite, with respect afforded to stablemate Limerick Lace.
The latter was a ten-length winner at Doncaster on her previous outing, with the horse having obliged as the 13/8 favourite in that Mares’ Chase and perhaps she represents good each-way value here. Back in November, there was another solid outing when the runner finished second behind Coko Beach when being sent off as the 4/1 market leader.
2023 Mares’ Chase Betting Tips
There is likely to be a reasonably big field for the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase and that means some big place value considering the bookies will be prepared to expand their each-way terms in order to drum up some final business for the Cheltenham Festival. Willie Mullins will hope to have secure the top trainers’ title by this race and Allegorie De Vassy runs for him here.
There is plenty to like about a six-year-old who has been foot perfect this season, with the horse winning a Novice Chase at Limerick Racecourse by an impressive nineteen lengths. That was over two miles, six furlongs on heavy ground, while it was followed by a virtually identical win when scoring at Thurles at the end of January.
However, Impervious can hold a candle to that form and she has enjoyed three straight wins including a Group 3 success in a novice chase when claiming the spoils at Punchestown in mid January. Previously to this, she was able to beat Dinoblue and the horse outran her odds in the Mares’ Novices Hurdle last year when finishing sixth at a big price.
Jeremys Flame has been in the winners’ enclosure several times this year and the latest success came at Huntingdon when scoring in a listed race at the end of January. The horse had previously found the going too tough when finishing fifth in the Paddy’s Rewards Club Chase at Leopardstown but might benefit from a drop in class here.
Concertista finished second in the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival and has now been sent over the bigger obstacles. Paul Townend for that narrow defeat and the eight-year-old is unbeaten over fences, with Sean O’Keefe having steered her to victory in a Novice Chase in early December.
There was another Novice Chase victory at Limerick Racecourse towards the end of December, although this will be a much stiffer test and perhaps Elimay could be a better Cheltenham Festival betting tip. The eight-year-old only lost this race by half a length last year and could come on for that particular run.
However, Mark Walsh was unable to steer Elimay to a victory on New Year’s Day when running in a Mares’ Chase on New Year’s Day, with Mount Ida the victor on that occasion and perhaps the Gordon Elliott-trained charge could be the best each-way betting value in the race.
Mount Ida was sent off as the 3/1 favourite in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase and duly obliged with a victory, with that Cheltenham success marking her out as a horse who has the course and distance already in the bag. The recent win against Elimay will strengthen the claim that the horse will run well here.
Riviere D’etel is another young horse who could be among the best Cheltenham Festival bets, with the five-year-old having run in esteemed company this season. The horse finished seventh in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the 2021 Cheltenham meeting and there have been three victories this season at Fairyhouse, Navan and Punchestown.
In the Racing Post Novice Chase on Boxing Day, the same runner finished second to Ferny Hollow over two miles and one furlong on soft ground, while the horse was a close second in the Irish Arkle Novices’ Chase, with connections now considering whether to go down this route or aim the horse at a different Cheltenham Festival target.
