2024 Kentucky Derby Betting Odds at Churchill Downs racecourse

Saturday, 04 May 2024

It’s the race where the United States of America stops to watch, with the 2023 Kentucky Derby forming the centrepiece of the meeting at Churchill Downs. Forte has some striking form coming into this battle of the three-year-olds, with the Todd Pletcher-trained charge having won a string of races although he will face stiff competition.

Tapit Trice has also been successful on a number of occasions this season and is also trained by Pletcher, while Angel Of Empire could potentially give Brad H Cox his best chance of success in this mega money race which forms one leg of the Triple Crown along with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

2023 Kentucky Derby Tips

Forte is bidding to deliver in the 2023 Kentucky Derby and it’s hard to crab the form of a three-year-old who has been enjoying a winning run. As a two-year-old, there were some notable victories at Saratoga and Keeneland, while the more recent outings have seen the horse triumph at Gulfstream Park, with the latest coming on 1 April.

Irad Ortiz Jnr was on board the odds-on favourite when the horse won the Florida Derby, with this being over one mile and one furlong on fast ground. However, the winning distance was only one length and this came after another odds-on success in the Fountain of Youth Stakes which was a Grade 2 encounter over one mile and half a furlong.

Todd Pletcher goes mob-handed by virtue of having Tapit Trice and he outlined his credentials with a win at Keeneland in April, with the 33/20 favourite edging out Verifying by a neck and that came after winning the South Tampa Bay Derby on 11 March, with plenty of punters sure to like the each-way chances of this horse.

Angel Of Empire and Practical Move come next in the betting and the former has obliged at Oaklawn Park and Fair Grounds this season, with the latest win coming in the Arkansas Derby where the horse was able to oblige by over four lengths. This came after a success in the Risen Star Stakes and perhaps this represents better value than the first two in the market.

The leading Kentucky Derby betting sites have priced up this enormous horse race in the USA, with Epicenter looking like a really viable contender for trainer Steven Asmussen. The handler has never had a winner in this race, although the early signs are promising for a three-year-old who has three wins under his belt during a relatively short career to date.

Sent off as the even money favourite in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby on 26 March 2022, there was everything to like about the run that the horse was given under crack jockey Joel Rosario, with the horse enjoying a victory by two-and-a-half lengths and this should set him up for a Kentucky Derby assault.

Saffie A Joseph Jr is also a trainer yet to taste success in a Kentucky Derby, with White Abarrio surely giving him a lively chance of a maiden victory in this Churchill Downs classic, with the horse having previously run at the course but only finishing third in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.

More recently, there was a stunning win in the Curlin Florida Derby where jockey Tyler Gaffalione was able to sit the horse behind the leading pair before overhauling Charge It on the run-in and the runner is likely to be available at a backable each-way price.

Charge It is likely to take his place in the 2022 Kentucky Derby odds and connections will want to frank the form from that race at Gulfstream Park, with the runner having been relatively lightly raced after winning a maiden encounter before that thrilling run which could have positive implications.

Messier is another notable runner that is near the top of the Kentucky Derby betting, with the Canadian-bred horse certainly meeting the required entry qualifications. This is a horse that used to be trained by Bob Baffert, although the runner has more recently come into the stable of Tim Yakteen. A second-placed finish in the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby will be regarded as a decent prep run when it come to this encounter.

2021 Kentucky Derby Betting Tips

The most famous horse race in the United States of America is the Kentucky Derby and we’re really excited to see the 2021 renewal, with the runners and riders travelling over a distance of 1.25 miles which is the equivalent of ten furlongs and it will be interesting to see which horse comes out on top for this extravaganza on a dirt track.

There are a maximum of twenty horses that can line up for the 2021 Kentucky Derby and they qualify for the race by earning points on the 2021 Road to Kentucky, with one horse standing out as far as the Kentucky Derby betting odds are concerned and it will be interesting to see if he can make it count.

Essential Quality Betting Favourite for Kentucky Derby

At the time of writing, you can get no bigger than 9/4 that Essential Quality wins the 2021 Kentucky Derby and there was plenty to like about a brilliant Blue Grass Stakes win in early April, with the Godolphin horse picking up where he left off last season when enjoying a glittering career as a two-year-old.

Essential Quality was previously crowned the Eclipse Awards champion after proving to be unbeatable during a juvenile career and the US racing world are now watching to see if this horse will set the benchmark when it comes to a win in the Run for the Roses.

Despite being sent off as the 1/2 favourite to win the Grade Two encounter over one mile and one furlong, it was a hard-fought win and the current odds suggest that he’s far less likely to win than to triumph in this encounter.

Rock Your World Could Go Close at Churchill Downs

Rock Your World secured an authoritative victory in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby recently and the John W Sadler-trained runner will arrive at the 2021 Kentucky Derby boasting an unbeaten record after winning a listed race at Santa Anita before claiming that big win which means that he’s among the Derby betting favourites.

Chad C Brown saw his horse Highly Motivated run Essential Quality desperately close in the Blue Grass Stakes at odds of 18/5 and perhaps the former could be a great each-way bet when it comes to the Kentucky Derby racecard, with Known Agenda another horse that can go close after winning a race at Gulfstream Park which was a Grade 1 encounter.

2020 Kentucky Derby Predictions and Tips

It’s fair to say that the Kentucky Derby is the leading race when it comes to American horse racing, with this Grade I stakes race being billed as the “Run of the Roses” and it’s over a distance of 1.25 miles at Churchill Downs.

The 2020 Kentucky Derby was originally due to take place in May 2020 and there were fears that we wouldn’t get a renewal of this famous race, although it has now been scheduled to take place on 5 September 2020 and there are sure to be lots of Kentucky Derby betting options.

Will Tiz The Law Become the Latest Derby Winner?

Like the Kentucky Oaks, we have an odds-on favourite for the Kentucky Derby and there is plenty to like about Tiz The Law who has barely put a foot wrong since making an outing as a two-year-old at Saratoga.

On that occasion, the horse announced himself with a four-length victory and there was then a triumph at Belmont Park in October before his only defeat in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (Grade 2) when the horse finished third despite being sent off as an odds-on shot.

As a three-year-old, Tiz The Law is completely unbeaten and that now spans four different races, with consecutive wins taking place at Gulfstream Park before the United States of America went into lockdown like everywhere else in the world.

Since coming out of lockdown, American horse racing has seen Tiz The Law add another couple of victories by triumphing at Belmont Park before landing another odds-on win at Saratoga and you can understand why there are plenty of punters looking to bet on this horse.

Which Horses Can Beat Tiz The Law?

Art Collector is trading between 6/1 and 8/1 depending on what bookie you choose and this is an interesting runner who now boasts a five-race unbeaten run coming into the 2020 Kentucky Derby, with many each-way backers cottoning on to a three-year-old who looks sure to run a big race.

The run started back in November with a victory in the Allowance Optional Claiming at Churchill Downs and Art Collector’s two-year-old form soon became strong form at three-year-old level, with a double at Churchill Downs in May and June.

There was then another triumph at Keeneland over one mile and one furlong before a recent success at Ellis Park and Art Collector looks overpriced at the current odds.

How to Bet on the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a hugely historic race and there is always the opportunity to place antepost bets on this race along with the Kentucky Oaks which precedes it and is essentially the female equivalent.

The 146th Kentucky Derby betting odds are now available, with customers able to bet on the winner of the race, while there’s the option to bet each-way if you fancy a particular horse to place. There are also likely to be offers such as Best Odds Guaranteed and also potential Kentucky Derby free bets.

Let’s start the bidding with AUTHENTIC who became the favourite to win the Kentucky Derby after winning the San Felipe Stakes. On 7 March, the three-year-old managed to pull off a highly impressive victory in what is traditionally known as one of the toughest Derby prep races. Jockey Drayden Van Dyke steered the horse to a victory over two lengths although the margin could have been a good deal bigger.

Legendary trainer Bob Baffert is no stranger to success in this race and won the Derby as recently as 2018 when triumphing with Justify, while he also prospered with American Pharaoh in 2015 and seems to rate Authentic as highly as anything he’s had before. However, Baffert’s winning horse in the San Felipe Stakes has never won the Kentucky Derby.

TIZ THE LAW was previously the favourite to win the Kentucky Derby, with the horse looking towards the Florida Derby on 28 March. There has been plenty of media hype surrounding the horse since the Sackatoga Stable charge triumphed in the Champagne Stakes back in October.

MISCHIEVOUS ALEX is as big as 16/1 with some firms to land a 2020 Derby success, although he’s also as short as 9/1. Winning Gulfstream’s Swale Stakes has really put this horse on the map, with trainer John Servis claiming that his runner should be undefeated although he has finished seventh before. It’s clear that he will definitely get the trip after the latest run.

Then we come to NADAL who is another Bob Baffert runner who has to be given a serious chance, with the colt actually named after star tennis player Rafael Nadal. If he hadn’t already demonstrated his credentials already, there was an impressive win in Saturday’s $1 million, Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Those 50 points should secure a place in the line-up for the big one.

Kentucky Derby Betting Odds

We’re looking at a wide open Kentucky Derby in 2020, with Charlatan also announcing himself as part of the equation after winning a one mile allowance race at Santa Anita. The horse is now among the favourites to win the big race and is actually trading as short as 7/2 with Unibet.

Tiz The Law is available at odds between 6/1 and 8/1, while Authentic could also go off around a similar price and it will be interesting to see whether the odds change if the race gets reassigned to later in the year.

Nadal and Mischievous Alex come next in the betting order and they’re trading between odds of 10/1 and 12/1, while there could be some lively outsiders in the form of Ete Indien and Maxfield.

How to Bet on the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is generally a competitive betting heat due to the fact that it draws the most talented horse from all over the United States of America. The three-year-olds that line up in this race will have had to come through some pretty stringent qualifying in the first place although a lot of them won’t have faced each other along the way.

Country House was the 2019 Kentucky Derby winner and the Bill Mott-trained charge actually crossed the line in second place before being awarded the victory following the subsequent disqualification of Maximum Security.

This was a big priced winner at 30/1 and just goes to show that it’s worth looking away from the favourites when it comes to landing the spoils, with 15/1 chance Code of Honor having finished second.

Bob Baffert is more of a household name when it comes to American racing and the star trainer landed victory with Justify in 2018 three years after landing a win in the same race with American Pharoah.

Justify was a shorter-priced winner of the race at 3/1 and 2017 winner Always Dreaming was also trading at a single figure price on the day.
