Matron Stakes 2026 Betting Odds
We’ve got an exciting one-mile encounter at Leopardstown on Saturday, with January running for Aidan O’Brien. The same handler has Exactly running and the pair could both be in the final shake-up. However, there’s a wide open betting market for this Group 1 affair, with Fallen Angel having won last time out and there could be more to come here.

Cercene has been a winner and runner-up in the previous two performances, with Joseph Murphy’s charge likely to be a warm order from an each-way perspective. Red Letter has landed two successive victories and we’re expecting a big challenge from the three-year-old, while Crimson Advocate has twice been in the winners’ enclosure this term.

The Matron Stakes promises to be a competitive tussle, with January having achieved successive runner-up spots in the lead-up to this race. Aidan O’Brien trains a three-year-old who has a high official rating and there have been some strong efforts this term. The latest effort was a runner-up at Deauville in the Group One Prix Rothschild - Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage.
That came after a second-placed finish at Newmarket where the 6/4 favourite was narrowly edged out by Cinderella’s Dream. There was also a solid effort at Royal Ascot when a third-placed finish was racked up in the Coronation Stakes. However, Fallen Angel was a winner last time out and has to be worthy of consideration here.
There was an excellent display at Deauville where the horse was able to edge out January and that came after finishing third in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes. That was a Group 2 affair, with the horse landing sixth place at big odds at Newbury. This came in the highly competitive Lockinge Stakes over one mile.
Cercene was second out of five runners at Goodwood when finishing behind favourite Whirl in the Nassau Stakes, with that performance coming after a victory at Royal Ascot. Sent off at odds of 33/1 in the Coronation Stakes, the horse was able to stun the racegoers by fending off favourite Zarigana, with January coming home in third place.

Porta Fortuna is a talented three-year-old who was able to oblige at Newmarket in July last time out, with Ryan Moore riding her to success in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, with that victory being achieved by nearly four lengths. This came after a success in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, with the horse finishing second in the 1,000 Guineas.
Fallen Angel was a winner last time out when obliging at the Curragh, with the 11/4 shot winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas and it was a sizeable three lengths that separated her from the chasing pack. However, the horse was previously only eighth in the 1,000 Guineas and there could be more value from backing some bigger-priced alternatives.
Opera Singer has the potential to go well for Aidan O’Brien and the three-year-old was successful at Goodwood in early August, with the horse performing well in the Nassau Stakes. There was everything to like about this performance over a mile and two furlongs, with the horse previously running well in the Coronation Stakes.
Elmalka was the winner of the 1,000 Guineas when the 28/1 shot stunned everyone by landing the spoils at Newmarket, although the horse could finish no better than fourth in the Coronation Stakes. There was a similar outcome in the Nassau Stakes, with Nashwa trading at a similar price although it’s been a while since the horse last won.
2022 Matron Stakes Betting Tips
Homeless Songs didn’t look like a Group 1 contender last autumn. The horse was sent off as a 9/4 shot in the Moyglare Stud Stakes before a fifth-placed finish over one furlong and she was given another chance by the punters when being backed as the 6/4 favourite only to finish sixth in a Group 3 encounter at Leopardstown.
However, the horse returned to the same Irish racecourse after a break of half a year and there was a one-length win at the beginning of April over seven furlongs on good ground. The win in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas was all the more impressive when obliging by five-and-a-half lengths.
Inspiral has two wins and one runner-up spot after a big break and the three-year-old was able to get home as a 15/8 favourite in the 2022 Coronation Stakes. There was lots to be impressed about her turn of foot, with the horse then chinned in the Falmouth Stakes as a 1/7 favourite.
There was a stunning win in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois where Frankie Dettori ensured that the horse was kept on well. Other horses that need to be respected include Saffron Beach and Jane Chapple-Hyam will have the four-year-old well schooled for this challenge.
