2025 Geoffrey Freer Stakes Betting Odds at Newbury racecourse

Saturday, 16 August 2025

There are a trio of three-year-olds lining up for the Geoffrey Freer Stakes and Pinhole looks to be the leading option when it comes to Saturday’s Newbury showdown. Ralph Beckett’s charge was an impressive winner last time out, although the latest betting odds imply that a runner in the field is likely to topple the favourite.

Candleford has a first and a third to his name this term, with the seven-year-old the most experienced campaigner in the field. Epic Poet has been a steady performer for the most part and the six-year-old can’t be easily discounted. Nightime Dancer also comes into the reckoning and the three-year-old was second last time out.

2025 Geoffrey Freer Stakes Betting Tips

Pinhole was sent off as the even money favourite in his last race and the horse duly obliged with a five and a half length victory. That was in the Winning Breeders’ Handicap although the previous outing only saw the horse finish eighth out of thirteen runners. In the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, it was an underwhelming effort as the horse failed to make an impression.

Previously to this, the horse only managed to land fourth out of eight runners at Chester in the Chester Vase Stakes, with the 9/2 shot struggling to get the one mile, four and a half furlong trip in the end. That was on good ground, so perhaps the favourite can be opposed here and Candleford certainly can’t be discounted based on showings so far.

The William Haggas-trained runner finished third out of five at Glorious Goodwood, with the horse performing well in the Coral Glorious Stakes. He was four and a half lengths off the pace here, with that coming after a victory at Beverley where four other runners were fended off. However, there was a last-placed finish in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Epic Poet was also way off the pace in the same race, although there had previously been a runner-up showing out of five horses at York Racecourse. Only a head separated the horse from favourite Rebel’s Romance over one mile and six furlongs. There was also a bright showing when the charge ended up third out of ten horses at Meydan Racecourse.

2024 Geoffrey Freer Stakes Tips

Al Aasy has been producing the goods this season, with the horse having been in the winners enclosure in early August. There was a 3/1 triumph in the Coral Glorious Stakes, with a one-length victory being achieved over one mile and four furlongs. This previously came after finishing second out of five runners in the Steventon Stakes at Newbury over a shorter distance.

Vauban has achieved a great deal at the age of six, with Willie Mullins training a runner who was third at the Curragh out of ten horses towards the end of July. This came after a fourth-placed finish in a field of nine at Royal Ascot when competing in a competitive Gold Cup, with the horse nine lengths behind eventual winner Kyprios.

Arrest is a younger adversary who certainly isn’t without a chance, with John & Thady Gosden training a horse that finished second out of six at Newmarket back in July. It was a smart enough performance in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes when travelling well over one mile and four furlongs, with this coming after a second-placed finish in the Ormonde Stakes.

Al Qareem has failed to land a success in the past six outings and the horse was somewhat off the pace in the Goodwood Cup Stakes, with the runner struggling to get the distance although that came after a solid performance in the John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes when finishing second and there could be more to come from the Karl Burke-trained runner.
