2025 Punchestown Champion Hurdle Betting Odds at Punchestown racecourse

Friday, 02 May 2025

The Champion Hurdle at Punchestown is set to be a highlight race of the meeting. State Man and Constitution Hill head the betting market and it’s hard to separate them. The latter has previously been more successful overall although the fact that the horse has endured two consecutive falls means that some punters will be wary of backing this runner.

State Man also fell last time out, with Lossiemouth potentially the one to back instead. Willie Mullins trains a runner who has secured back to back successes. She will also have a mares allowance and the same applies to Brighterdaysahead who was disappointing in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham but could bounce back here.

2025 Punchestown Champion Hurdle Betting Tips

We’re looking forward to the Punchestown Champion Hurdle and all eyes will be on Constitution Hill. The legendary hurdler has gone down at both Cheltenham and Aintree recently, although the horse could yet produce a winning performance in Ireland. Nicky Henderson will hope to see his charge stay on his feet and produce that famous turn of speed.

Before those two falls, there was a win at Cheltenham back in January and that came after a Boxing Day success at Kempton Park. However, some punters will be wary of the horse and perhaps State Man offers a more viable option. The eight-year-old was also a faller in the Champion Hurdle although that came after a victory at Leopardstown.

That was a six and a half length success as the 5/4 favourite, with Lossiemouth set to line up against her male adversaries. There was plenty to like about the six-year-old’s performance in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham and that came before succeeding at Aintree. The success in the Aintree Hurdle came over two miles and four furlongs.

She’s our idea of the best bet for this race, while Brighterdaysahead could also be a contender. The mare was a disappointing fourth in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham but had previously won three successive races. There was a success at Leopardstown over the festive period after a November win at Punchestown.

2024 Punchestown Champion Chase Tips

State Man might have benefitted from Constitution Hill not running in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, although that victory at Prestbury Park was the fourth successive victory of the season. The horse was able to beat Irish Point by a length and a quarter after claiming the spoils at the Dublin Racing Festival when fending off Bob Olinger.

At Leopardstown during the festive season, State Man beat Impaire Et Passe and two other runners after making a seasonal debut at Punchestown when winning in another small field. The odds are short when it comes to State Man winning this race and this could be a popular horse racing accumulator selection.

Irish Point is also entered in the Stayers’ Hurdle although the Gordon Elliott-trained runner might take his chances in this race and there wasn’t much to separate him and State Man in the English Champion Hurdle, with the six-year-old having previously triumphed at Leopardstown during the festive season.

Lossiemouth is in receipt of seven pounds due to her mares’ status, with Willie Mullins saddling a horse who has won both encounters this season. There was a three-length victory at the Cheltenham Festival when winning the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle and that came after winning the Unibet Hurdle at the same track.

2023 Punchestown Champion Hurdle Tips

State Man landed three successive wins this season and should be able to return to the winners’ enclosure after finishing second in the English Champion Hurdle. The six-year-old has already won at Punchestown this season when landing the spoils at odds of 4/9 when flourishing in the Morgiana Hurdle, while there was a double success at Leopardstown.

The horse won the Matheson Hurdle when being sent off as the 4/6 favourite and there was everything to like about the way in which the Willie Mullins-trained runner was able to fend off Honeysuckle before running his own race at the Cheltenham Festival. There was only nine lengths separating Constitution Hill and this runner over two miles.

Vauban is the horse that might off the strongest challenge, with the five-year-old having finished fourth in the English Champion Hurdle and the Rich Ricci-owned runner has over six lengths to find on State Man, with the horse having now finished behind his stablemate on three successive occasions.

Pied Piper is potentially a horse that can run a bigger race and the Gordon Elliott-trained runner was second in the County Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham when being sent off at odds of 12/1. It was only 33/1 outsider Faivoir who was able to beat this runner and perhaps there is more to come from this talented five-year-old.

2022 Punchestown Champion Hurdle Tips

Constitution Hill has only run on three occasions although the five-year-old grabbed lots of Cheltenham headlines during the 2022 Festival. Nicky Henderson was giving out very positive vibes before the 2022 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the runner motored up the hill to suggest that this is a horse that could give Honeysuckle a big race in next year’s Champion Hurdle.

Perhaps Constitution Hill will clash with Honeysuckle if the latter lines up in this race and it’s a mouth-watering prospect to see the two horses clash over two miles for the first time. The mare has won two English Champion Hurdles and she will continue to benefit from a mares’ allowance when it comes to these Grade 1 encounters.

Bookmaker Unibet were the first to go up with prices and they have Honeysuckle trading at around the even money mark, with Henry de Bromhead’s horse unbeaten during her career thus far and she has passed every test with flying colours, with the mare obliging at betting odds of 8/11 in the 2022 Champion Hurdle.

It was arguably Honeysuckle’s toughest assignment of her career to date and Rachael Blackmore is likely to be reunited with a horse that won the Unibet Champion Hurdle by three lengths when fending off the challenge of previous winner Epatante who could well line up in this encounter.

Zanahiyr is currently the third favourite to win the Punchestown Champion Hurdle and the horse ran an excellent race in the 2022 Champion Hurdle. The Gordon Elliott-trained charge was able to finish in third place in the Grade 1 race and that was despite being sent off at a starting price of 28/1.

Jack Kennedy is likely to be on board for this heat and there will be a hope that the two betting favourites are able to somehow outbattle each other and leave an opportunity. Even running into another third spot would be a great outcome, with Teahupoo bidding for the same result.
