Lonsdale Cup 2026 Betting Odds

Friday 21 August 2026 · York · By Matthew Glazier

The Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes runs over two miles, half a furlong, with this being a Group 2 encounter featuring eight runners. Trawlerman sets the standard and the seven-year-old is bidding for a third successive win. It might take a fine performance to beat the favourite, although Illinois is a four-year-old who has notched a win and two runner-up appearances this term.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained charge certainly merits consideration, with Al Qareem having been in the winners enclosure no less than three times this season. The six-year-old has bold claims and could be a good each-way contender. Sweet William is yet to win this term although perhaps he can come to the fore here.

2025 Lonsdale Cup Stakes Betting Tips

There are several horses who could end up being successful in the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes, with Trawlerman having landed successive victories ahead of this encounter. The seven-year-old was last seen winning at Royal Ascot. There was a lot to like about this seven length success in the Ascot Gold Cup where Illinois was comfortably beaten.

That came after another dazzling showing at Sandown at the end of May where the 4/5 favourite was able to score in the Henry II Stakes. There was everything to like about this effort over two miles, having previously ran well at Meydan when finishing fifth in the Dubai Gold Cup and there was also third in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot last October.

Illinois hasn’t been out of the first two in the three efforts so far this season. Aidan O’Brien saddles a runner who could be open to more improvement than the older favourite. The season started with a win at Chester in the Ormonde Stakes where the 6/5 favourite was able to see off Al Qareem by over a length.

The horse then turned out at Royal Ascot when getting chinned by Trawlerman although that’s not to say he can’t get close this time. There was a solid effort in the Goodwood Cup Stakes where the 7/4 favourite was beaten by Scandinavia, with Al Qareem potentially the each-way betting value in the race.

2023 Lonsdale Cup Tips

The 2023 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup Stakes takes place over two miles and half a furlong, with Gregory a potential entrant for a long distance encounter. The horse would be favourably weighted carrying 8-7 although it’s possible that the three-year-old will run in the Great Voltigeur Stakes and perhaps stablemate Courage Mon Ami is a better contender.

Trading at a similar price, the four-year-old is more likely to run in this encounter and there have been wins at Goodwood and Ascot thus far. A memorial handicap victory as the 6/4 favourite was followed by a strong performance in the Royal Ascot Gold Cup where the horse was able to score over favourite Coltrane by less than a length.

Vauban is an interesting runner, with the Willie Mullins-trained horse having enjoyed a decorated career in the National Hunt world. There was a victory over one mile and six furlongs in the Copper Horse Handicap, with the runner obliging by a big distance when beating Absurde by over seven lengths.

Quickthorn could record a consecutive hat-trick of wins by recording a victory in this Ebor Festival encounter. The six-year-old was able to triumph in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes when obliging at betting odds of 16/1. Beating Emily Dickinson into second place, the winner was further ahead of the favourite Courage Mon Ami on that occasion.

York Racecourse is one of the most prestigious in Great Britain and the Knavesmire hosts a wide range of horse races throughout the Flat racing calendar. This includes the Lonsdale Cup which is run over two miles and this distance means that you need to back a horse that is going to have the stamina to compete all the way to the end.

In 2022, there was a total purse of £250,000 and this attracts some star performers. We saw the legendary Stradivarius achieve some notable successes in this race. The John Gosden-trained runner claimed a victory as a four-year-old in 2018, with the horse then returning to the track to win twelve months later.

The York betting odds were a lot shorter when Stradivarius lined up in 2021 before delivering a third victory. There have also been a couple of recent five-year-olds who have achieved a win, with Enbihaar obliging in 2020 and it was Quickthorn in 2022 that was able to emerge victorious.

For those punters looking for Best Odds Guaranteed at Goodwood Racecourse, there are lots of bookmakers who have this concession available for the Lonsdale Cup. There is also the chance to get York horse racing live streaming once you have placed a bet on the action, with the odds sometimes available on an antepost basis.

Make sure that you always study the form and work out which long-distance runners are performing the best of all. It’s an encounter which has had Group 2 status since 2004 and this forms part of the York Ebor Festival racecard, with the heat taking place on Day Three of the meeting.
