2022 Cox Plate Tips
Anamoe has been warming up for another shot at the Cox Plate, with the horse winning the Winx Stakes on 20 August 2022, with the James Cummings-trained runner obliging as the 6/4 favourite on that occasion. That was over seven furlongs in a Group 1 encounter, while this was followed up by a repeat win at Randwick Racecourse when obliging in the Fujitsu General George Main Stakes.
A third Group 1 success came in the form of the Neds Might and Power, with James McDonald getting a great tune out of the horse where a victory of a head occurred against I’m Thunderstruck and it appears that the latter will once again be lining up against Anamoe when it comes to the Cox Plate.
Indeed, that runner-up performance from the five-year-old has caused the bookmakers to sit up and take notice. Previously to this, the horse was underwhelming when finishing fourth in the Quayclean Underwood Stakes, with the runner having claimed the prize money when running in the Makybe Diva Stakes.
Zaaki was also in the shake-up when running against Anamoe and I’m Thunderstruck and it would be no surprise to see these three horses the first home when it comes to the Cox Plate. Zaaki did finish third in the Underwood Stakes and Annabel Neasham will hope that her charge can frank the form and secure the victory.
2020 Cox Plate Betting Odds
The 2020 Cox Plate will take place at Moonee Valley Racecourse on 24 October, with Almond Eye potentially the horse that will take all the beating and the Japanese raider will arrive with a glittering reputation.
The five-year-old won the Victoria Mile in Tokyo on 17 May when obliging as the 2/5 favourite, while the horse was then sent off favourite in the Yasuda Kinen on 7 June 2020, with Gran Allegria beating the runner on that occasion.
Verry Elleegant looks like another leading contender and bookmaker bet365 have this New Zealand raider as the market favourite, with the Chris Waller-trained charge returning to the track after a lengthy absence to win the Group 1 Winx Stakes on 22 August 2020.
Russian Camelot also deserves respect and will be many people’s idea of a good each-way bet on the Cox Plate racecard, with the horse winning the TAB South Australian Derby at Morphetville on 9 May 2020 and trainer Danny O’Brien will surely feel confident that the horse can have a major say in this clash.
The History of the Cox Plate
The W.S. Cox Plate is aptly named after W.S. Cox and this is a thoroughbred Group 1 horse race for runners aged three or older. The race has been in operation since 1922 and it was first run on Saturday 28 October that year with a purse of £1,000.
The race was included as part of the Emirates World Series Racing Championship in the years between 1999-2005, with many leading racehorses in Australia and New Zealand landing victory over the years.
The most famous winner in recent years was Winx who claimed the spoils between 2015-2018 and Kingston Town has also been a three-time champion who will go down in Cox Plate history.
We’re firmly into the Australian horse racing season and races don’t come much bigger than the Cox Plate which is scheduled to take place on 26 October.
This encounter is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race that is open to runners who are aged three or older, with the distance being just over 2000 metres.
The stake money is not insubstantial and there’s a purse of $5,000,000 on the table, with the race first being inaugurated in 1922 and the race has been dominated in recent times by Winx who has triumphed four times between 2015-2018.
Winx was the winner at odds of 4.60 in 2015 and won at a price of 1.70 a year later, although the past two victories have seen the Australian superstar win at much shorter odds.
Lys Gracieux Favourite for 2019 Renewal
Winx won’t be lining up for the latest race, although Lys Gracieux is currently trading as the favourite to win, with the five-year-old among the Japanese horses that will be making the trip over to Australia for this meeting.
The horse is among the leading horses in Japan and recently won a Grade 1 race in Hanshin, with the runner among the favourites on that occasion and the connections have been keeping their powder dry ever since.
It’s worth noting that Lys Gracieux hasn’t been outside the first three places in the past six runnings, although this threatens to be a far more competitive tussle.
Avilius is a 4/1 chance who wears the famous Godolphin colours and there was plenty to like about September’s run at Randwick where the talented five-year-old was able to oblige in the Group 1 Colgate Optic White Stakes.
Trainer James Cummings will now be training his charge for the Cox Plate and he’s likely to have talented jockey Kerrin McEvoy to ride the horse once again.
The horse ran in the 2018 Cox Plate although he finished a distant fourth on that occasion behind Winx, with the runner having shown plenty of improvement since then.
Mystic Journey is another horse to watch, with the four-year-old having won a Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley a year ago and will now step up in grade for this encounter.
The horse finished fifth behind Finche in the recent TAB Turnbull Stakes and could improve for the run.
