2024 Cox Plate Betting Odds at Moonee Valley racecourse

Saturday, 26 October 2024

The Australian horse racing betting sites are finding it hard to split the leading protagonists when it comes to the latest renewal of the Cox Plate. This is considered to be the best weight-for-age race in the world, with the spring encounter seeing a raft of middle-distance horses battling it out at Moonee Valley.

Pride Of Jenni could be the one to follow, with the mare having impressed during her races so far. However, it’s Japanese raider Prognosis who is given the edge by the bookmakers, with Via Sistina having landing a succession of Group 1 races in Australia and the Chris Waller-trained runner has each-way claims.

2024 Cox Plate Tips

Prognosis is an intriguing runner, with the six-year-old potentially going off as favourite for the 2024 Cox Plate. The horse was sent off as a strong odds-on market leader for the Sapporo Kinen although flattered to deceive when landing fourth place. This came after second place in the FWD QEII Cup at Sha Tin at the end of April.

Pride Of Jenni returns to Moonee Valley after previously claiming a victory at this course at the end of September, with the mare fending off three other runners in the Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes. Previously to this, there was a second-placed finish in the Crown Makybe Diva Stakes when finishing second to Mr Brightside.

Via Sistina has enjoyed a spectacular victory this season, with a victory coming at Flemington when the horse claimed a success ahead of Buckaroo. Chris Waller’s charge was successful over one mile and two furlongs, with that coming after a fifth-placed finish behind Pride Of Jenni in a previous encounter.

Broadsiding is also one to watch, with the three-year-old having scope for improvement under trainer James Cummings. Last time out, there was a fourth-placed finish out of eleven horses in the Caulfield Guineas when being sent off as odds-on favourite, with a previous success coming in the James Squire Golden Rose over seven furlongs.

2023 Cox Plate Tips

We’re intrigued to see how the betting market pans out for the W. S. Cox Plate, with Romantic Warrior looking like the strongest contender according to the latest odds. The five-year-old was last seen running in the TAB Turnbull Stakes, with the horse being sent off as the 29/20 favourite before finishing in fourth place.

Previously to this were a couple of outings at Sha Tin, with the horse having his colours lowered when being priced as the 1/5 favourite. The horse did register a victory in the Group One FWD QEII Cup over one mile and two furlongs, although some punters will be looking at a bigger priced alternative for this encounter.

Alligator Blood has scored two successive wins heading to Moonee Valley and the seven-year-old was on target at Caulfield Racecourse on 14 October. This was a two-length success in Neds Might And Power which was a Group One encounter, while the same horse bagged a victory in the Underwood Stakes on 23 September which was another G1 success.

Victoria Road was third in the Dullingham Park Stakes over one mile and that performance in the Group Two encounter was fairly strong. This came after a disappointing outing at Deauville although we are talking about a runner who was able to triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland back in November.

2022 Cox Plate Tips

Anamoe has been warming up for another shot at the Cox Plate, with the horse winning the Winx Stakes on 20 August 2022, with the James Cummings-trained runner obliging as the 6/4 favourite on that occasion. That was over seven furlongs in a Group 1 encounter, while this was followed up by a repeat win at Randwick Racecourse when obliging in the Fujitsu General George Main Stakes.

A third Group 1 success came in the form of the Neds Might and Power, with James McDonald getting a great tune out of the horse where a victory of a head occurred against I’m Thunderstruck and it appears that the latter will once again be lining up against Anamoe when it comes to the Cox Plate.

Indeed, that runner-up performance from the five-year-old has caused the bookmakers to sit up and take notice. Previously to this, the horse was underwhelming when finishing fourth in the Quayclean Underwood Stakes, with the runner having claimed the prize money when running in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

Zaaki was also in the shake-up when running against Anamoe and I’m Thunderstruck and it would be no surprise to see these three horses the first home when it comes to the Cox Plate. Zaaki did finish third in the Underwood Stakes and Annabel Neasham will hope that her charge can frank the form and secure the victory.

2020 Cox Plate Betting Odds

The 2020 Cox Plate will take place at Moonee Valley Racecourse on 24 October, with Almond Eye potentially the horse that will take all the beating and the Japanese raider will arrive with a glittering reputation.

The five-year-old won the Victoria Mile in Tokyo on 17 May when obliging as the 2/5 favourite, while the horse was then sent off favourite in the Yasuda Kinen on 7 June 2020, with Gran Allegria beating the runner on that occasion.

Verry Elleegant looks like another leading contender and bookmaker bet365 have this New Zealand raider as the market favourite, with the Chris Waller-trained charge returning to the track after a lengthy absence to win the Group 1 Winx Stakes on 22 August 2020.

Russian Camelot also deserves respect and will be many people’s idea of a good each-way bet on the Cox Plate racecard, with the horse winning the TAB South Australian Derby at Morphetville on 9 May 2020 and trainer Danny O’Brien will surely feel confident that the horse can have a major say in this clash.

The History of the Cox Plate

The W.S. Cox Plate is aptly named after W.S. Cox and this is a thoroughbred Group 1 horse race for runners aged three or older. The race has been in operation since 1922 and it was first run on Saturday 28 October that year with a purse of £1,000.

The race was included as part of the Emirates World Series Racing Championship in the years between 1999-2005, with many leading racehorses in Australia and New Zealand landing victory over the years.

The most famous winner in recent years was Winx who claimed the spoils between 2015-2018 and Kingston Town has also been a three-time champion who will go down in Cox Plate history.

We’re firmly into the Australian horse racing season and races don’t come much bigger than the Cox Plate which is scheduled to take place on 26 October.

This encounter is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race that is open to runners who are aged three or older, with the distance being just over 2000 metres.

The stake money is not insubstantial and there’s a purse of $5,000,000 on the table, with the race first being inaugurated in 1922 and the race has been dominated in recent times by Winx who has triumphed four times between 2015-2018.

Winx was the winner at odds of 4.60 in 2015 and won at a price of 1.70 a year later, although the past two victories have seen the Australian superstar win at much shorter odds.

Lys Gracieux Favourite for 2019 Renewal

Winx won’t be lining up for the latest race, although Lys Gracieux is currently trading as the favourite to win, with the five-year-old among the Japanese horses that will be making the trip over to Australia for this meeting.

The horse is among the leading horses in Japan and recently won a Grade 1 race in Hanshin, with the runner among the favourites on that occasion and the connections have been keeping their powder dry ever since.

It’s worth noting that Lys Gracieux hasn’t been outside the first three places in the past six runnings, although this threatens to be a far more competitive tussle.

Avilius is a 4/1 chance who wears the famous Godolphin colours and there was plenty to like about September’s run at Randwick where the talented five-year-old was able to oblige in the Group 1 Colgate Optic White Stakes.

Trainer James Cummings will now be training his charge for the Cox Plate and he’s likely to have talented jockey Kerrin McEvoy to ride the horse once again.

The horse ran in the 2018 Cox Plate although he finished a distant fourth on that occasion behind Winx, with the runner having shown plenty of improvement since then.

Mystic Journey is another horse to watch, with the four-year-old having won a Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley a year ago and will now step up in grade for this encounter.

The horse finished fifth behind Finche in the recent TAB Turnbull Stakes and could improve for the run.
