Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle Results at Musselburgh — 01 January 2025

Wednesday, 01 January 2025

Five of the six runners lining up for the Daily Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle can feasibly win this encounter, with Liari a talented five-year-old who could end up having too much class for the rest of the field. There was plenty to like about some of the performances last season, with Benson and Sweet Fantasy next in the market.

Benson is a ten-year-old who has the potential to go well over this distance, while Sweet Fantasy bagged a couple of notable wins last season. Bold Light has been in the winners’ enclosure this term and could be in the reckoning, while Ballygeary has run plenty of times already this season.

2025 Daily Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle Tips

Liari has been installed as the short-priced favourite to win the Daily Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle, with the five-year-old beginning the season with a third-placed finish out of eleven runners. There was then a midfield effort at Newbury where the 9/1 chance was able to perform well in the Intermediate Handicap Hurdle.

Benson is twice the favourite’s age and the Sandy Thomson-trained charge found the going too tough at Newcastle at the end of November, with the runner not good enough in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle. Previously to this, there was a more solid effort at Hexham and this should be a race where the horse has genuine claims of victory.

Sweet Fantasy was able to score at Plumpton and Catterick earlier in the year, with the latest showing taking place at Cheltenham where the horse finished sixth in the Mares’ Handicap Hurdle. The James Owen-trained mare could well build on this performance and perhaps this is the value bet in the race.

Bold Light runs for Lucinda Russell, with the eight-year-old running well at Haydock last time out. It was a third-placed finish out of six and that came after a victory at Kelso where nine other runners were beaten over two miles. This seven-length triumph illustrates that the horse might well have the credentials to go close here.
