  • Feature raceLansdown Fillies' Stakes

The highest flat racecourse in Britain, 780 feet above sea level.

Bath is a beautiful Roman city and one of the star attractions is Bath Racecourse which is located about three miles away from the city centre. It’s located on a place called Lansdown Hill, with the actual track being left-handed.

The distance of Bath Racecourse is roughly one mile and four furlongs, with the run-in being around half-a-mile and this offers some brilliant scenery by virtue of the fact that this racecourse is the highest Flat one above sea level.

Bath Racecourse Hosts Lansdown Fillies’ Stakes

Every April, thousands of racegoers attend Bath Racecourse to watch the Lansdown Fillies’ Stakes, a race which is run on a Saturday as part of a full card of racing. It’s a five-furlong dash to see who will win this listed encounter.

As the name suggests, it’s a race that is only open to fillies, with horses of the age of three and above able to compete and this has been in operation since 1999.

Trainer Clive Cox has managed to win this race on three occasions, the most recent being Priceless in 2017, while the most recent winner was Queen of Desire who won for trainer Roger Varian in 2019.

Enjoy the Beckford Stakes at Bath

The Beckford Stakes is a relatively new race that was introduced at Bath Racecourse in 2016, with Twitch being the first winner for trainer James Doyle.

Since then, Aljezeera won in 2017 when Frankie Dettori steered the three-year-old to victory, while trainer Willie Mullins experienced some rare Flat success a year later when winning with True Self.

This is a listed flat horse race which is open to fillies and mares who are aged three years and older. It is run over a distance of one mile and six furlongs, with the race generally being run in October.

Bath Racecourse is Truly Historic

People have been watching horse racing at Bath since the early 18th century. However, the first official meeting took place in 1815, with that being the only meeting throughout the calendar year at first.

In the present day, punters can enjoy 22 different meetings throughout the year, with the Somerset Stakes having previously been the most notable race of them all and this is still an encounter that takes place every summer.
