The Hipódromo da Gávea has been in operation since 1926, with Brazilian racing fans able to attend the course in Rio de Janeiro. As many as 80,000 spectators can attend a day’s racing and the track is very popular due to its location. There are many competitive races that take place on the left-handed course.

This dirt track has a ten-furlong circumference and a home straight which measures roughly three furlongs. The Brazil Jockey Club are the owners of this track and there are also turf races that are held by the organisers.

Thousands of racegoers attend the Hipódromo da Gávea throughout the course of a calendar year and the principal race is the Grande Premio Brasil which is run over twelve furlongs for three-year-olds. This race takes place in June and it has been in operation since 1933.

The race takes place over 2,400 metres and there is also the Triple Crown which is comprised of the Grande Premio do Rio de Janeiro, the Grande Premio Francisco Eduardo de Paula Machado and the Grande Premio Cruzeiro du Sul.
