The race attained Group 3 status in 1995, with this being the only graded race currently featuring at this course.
Annus Mirabilis has landed three successive wins in this race when the horse secured the spoils between 1996 and 1998. Frankie Dettori is one of the most successful jockeys in this encounter and he won twice on the above horse along with landing a further three victories on horses that included Naheef and Planteur. Sir Michael Stoute has been hugely successful in the Winter Hill Stakes, with the trainer having landed ten victories including three on the spin. Solid Stone, Regal Reality and Passenger landed the spoils in succession between 2021 and 2023.

Since 2004, the August Stakes has enjoyed listed status and there are several Monday evening race meetings at this course. Although this is predominantly a racecourse which hosts flat races, there are also National Hunt encounters which take place in November and also January.
