Most horse racing fans would list The Curragh as one of the leading racecourses in Ireland, with this race track famous for hosting all the Irish flat racing classics including the Irish Derby, Irish Oaks, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas and Irish St Leger.

The racecourse itself is located in County Kildare, with the first Derby being held in 1866 although the same piece of land has been used for racing horses for centuries, with Johnny Murtagh and Mick Kinane the two jockeys who have claimed over 300 victories at this racecourse.

Bet on the Big Races at The Curragh

The Curragh racecards are always packed with leading horse races and it’s hardly a surprise considering that this racecourse in Ireland has the monopoly when it comes to all the Irish classic races. The right-handed track has excellent facilities and boasts a testing uphill finish which can often lead to many of the races involving exciting finishes.

The biggest of The Curragh races is probably the Irish Derby which is one of several Group 1 flat encounters that takes place at this course throughout the year and this is a stern test of stamina over one mile and four furlongs, with legendary trainer Aidan O’Brien boasting fourteen victories including Sovereign in 2019 and Santiago in 2020.

The Irish Derby takes place three weeks after the English Derby and there are many horses that have been able to land victory in both races in the same year. The latest dual victor was Harzand in 2016.

The Irish Oaks is another Group 1 encounter which is open for all the leading three-year-old fillies to compete and this is another one mile and four furlong encounter which has seen Sir Michael Stoute boast a tremendous record, with the trainer having saddled six horses to victory, while Johnny Murtagh has been similarly successful as a jockey.

The legendary Enable was the winner of the Irish Oaks in 2017 and that was after winning the Epsom Oaks in the same year, with the John Gosden horse one of the highest profile winners on The Curragh racecard in recent years and she was a popular bet among racegoers.

The Irish 2,000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas are other popular races on the Curragh race cards, while you can enjoy several other Group 1 encounters through the year and these include the Tattersalls Gold Cup which also takes place in May and is another high-profile event.
